This 1968 Mt. San Jacinto Junior College baseball team featured Sal Valdivia Jr. (second row, third from left), Butch Murphy (second row, fourth from left), and Sam Racadio (second row, far right). Half Irish and half Mexican, Murphy grew up on the Pechanga Indian Reservation and was the first varsity baseball coach at Murietta Valley High School. Racadio became the first city manager of Highland and also served as a Highland City Council member.

The Valdivia family was the recipient of an incredible three straight Most Valuable Player awards at Beaumont High School from 1962 to 1964. Taking the honors were David (1962 MVP, above, left), Robert (1963 MVP, above, right), and Sal Valdivia Jr. (1964 MVP, at right). Robert was an outstanding fast-pitch softball player as well, and he once hit a home run off Eddie “The King” Feigner—who earned fame for striking out, in order, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Maury Wills, Harmon Killebrew, and Roberto Clemente. David, Robert, and Sal were all inducted into the Southern California Latino Native American Sports Hall of Fame. Until this day, the Valdivia family holds various sports records at Beaumont High School. In addition, Sal Jr. also won MVP honors in basketball and football. (Courtesy of Sal Valdivia Jr.)
